From the Internet to Our Favorite Bench in the Park

How One Click Changed My Ordinary Afternoons

I never thought that in the age of the internet and fleeting connections I’d manage to meet someone in a way that felt so natural and genuine. Honestly, I never even planned on creating a dating app profile on localdatingonline.com. Until then, I’d always preferred meeting people the traditional way — through friends, at a café, or while waiting in line for coffee. But that evening, after a long day at work, something urged me to give it a try.

I clicked “sign up,” answered a few simple questions, and uploaded a photo — one where I was sitting in a summer dress under a big maple tree in the park. I captioned it playfully: “Looking for someone to chat with in the shade and watch the clouds go by.”

Less than two days later, I got his message. Tom — dark hair, warm smile, and a straightforward profile that read: “I love hiking, good coffee, and honest conversations.” He referenced my photo:

“Is that the park where the lilacs bloom in May? If so, I’d love to hear about your favorite spots there.”

I was immediately charmed by his sincerity. We wrote back to each other almost instantly and, more importantly, began to talk like old friends — about the weather, the books we were reading, our favorite music, and how hard it can be to find real closeness in today’s world.

Eventually, one of us suggested meeting up.

— Maybe tomorrow at five by the main gate? — he wrote.

— I’m in! — I replied, though I felt a slight flutter of nerves.

The next day, the weather was perfect — a warm spring breeze, slow-moving clouds, and the scent of freshly cut grass. I walked through the park a bit faster than usual, trying to hide my nerves behind a smile.

Tom was already waiting by the gate. When he saw me, he waved warmly.

— Hey, you’re finally here in the offline version — he joked, and I laughed louder than I expected.

We wandered around without a plan, peeking into familiar alleys, admiring the greenery, and laughing at silly jokes. We talked about travel, about our plans, and about how easy it is to overlook the most important things in everyday life.

At one point, we sat down on an old, slightly worn bench beneath the maple — the very one in my profile picture.

— This is your favorite one, isn’t it? — he asked with a smile.

— You guessed it — I replied, feeling in that simple moment that something in my life was changing for the better.

From that day on, that bench became ours. We met there every week — at first only after work, then on Saturdays, and eventually whenever we could steal a moment together. We’d talk about our dreams, our plans, and our challenges, sipping coffee from a thermos and sharing homemade cookies.

And in time, I realized that happiness doesn’t have to be far away — sometimes it’s waiting for you right around the corner, under a familiar tree in a nearby park, and in the eyes of someone who came into your life by sheer chance.

Now, sitting on that same bench, I know that even though our story began online, true love blossomed right here — in a simple gesture, a heartfelt laugh, and the quiet joy of simply being together.
